يتناول الكاتب في هذه الرحلة تفاصيل متنوعة من حياته، يطوف فيها في مناجاة نفسية ذاتية بين مدن عدة، يبدأ من الأعظمية في بغداد العاصمة، إلى دمشق ومنها إلى الدوحة ثم إلى سامراء فبعض أحياء بغداد عودة إلى دمشق، ثم إلى مسقط، فهلسسنكي، يقدِّم فاروق يوسف من خلال فصول الكتاب تجارب ذاتية متنوعة يربطها عدم الاستقرار في الزمان والمكان، ممَّا وردَ في " رسوم نهارية ومسافر نائم":
" صار التذكر نوعاً من التأليف، فأنا في الحقيقة أكتب عن حياة عاشها شخص آخر، قد يكون هو ذلك الشخص الذي يشبهني، بالرغم من أنه لم يعش سوى أشهر قليلة بعد ولادته، عن طريق التذكر صرت أسعى إلى التحقق من أن الحياة التي صرتُ أتذكرها في أثناء الكتابة لم تكن حياة متخيلة، لقد عشت هناك، أعرف ذلك، ولكن هذه الواقع التي صارت تنبعث من بين الكلمات هل عشتها شخصياً؟، أم أن شخصاً آخر كان قد رواها لي بعد أن عاشها؟.".
