شكّل أدب اليوميات عماد مشروع "ارتياد الآفاق" الذي يُعدّ، اليوم، مشروعاً فريداً من نوعه في الثقافة العربية، لكونه عَدّ أن أدب السفر والتواصل مع الآخر هو الاختبار الأهمّ والدليل الأسطع على انفتاح ثقافة على ثقافات أخرى. ولطالما نظرنا إلى سطور يوميات الرحّالة والمقيمين في المنافي وديار الاغتراب، بوصفها مُدوّنات، تُشكّل وثائق أدبية وتاريخية معا، وهي لوحات فنّيّة مدهشة، تكشف عن مشاعر حميمة وخلجات وجدانية فيّاضة، وخواطر وانطباعات، ترصد المرئيات، وغالباً ما تُثري القرّاء بحَدْس شاعري، وابتكار فنّيّ، وجمال في التعبير، عبر خيال يُعانق الواقع، ويُوقظ الذاكرة، فيأتي بالممتع والمدهش. مرايا تتعاكس، بلدان قريبة وبعيدة، أماكن جديدة وزوايا لم تُستكشَف، ولا يمكن استكشافها إلا بالأدب، وقد استنفد التسجيل والتصوير المباشر غايتهما. ووُلد في العصور الحديثة أدب يوميات، يجعل من أصحابه شعراء وفنّانين أكثر منهم مُدوّني وقائع. اكتشاف المكان واكتشاف الذات سعياً وراء فَهْم حقيقيّ لها. هكذا تنبثق الرؤى من معاشرة الناس والمُدُن والأنهار والجبال، وترتسم في صياغات جديدة للوجدان والنظر والتعبير عبر نصوص حية عابرة للزمان، كما هي عابرة للمكان.
نبّهنا مراراً خلال سنوات عملنا في هذا اللون الأدبي إلى أن أحد أهداف ما حقّقنا ونشرناه من كُتُب اليوميات والرحلات العربية إلى العالم، هو الكشف عن طبيعة الوعي بالآخر الذي تشكَّل عن طريق السفر والإقامة في ظهراني الآخر، والأفكار التي تسرّبت عبر سطور الكتاب، والانتباهات التي ميَّزت نظرتهم إلى الدول والناس والأفكار. فأدب اليوميات، على هذا الصعيد، يُشكِّل ثروةً معرفيَّةً كبيرةً، ومخزناً للقصص والظواهر والأفكار، فضلاً عن كونه مادّة سرديّة مُشوِّقة، تحتوي على الطريف والغريب والمُدهش ممّا التقطتْه عيون تتجوّل، وأنفسٌ تنفعل بما ترى، ووعي يلمُّ بالأشياء، ويُحلِّلها، ويراقب الظواهرَ، ويتفكَّرُ بها.
