تحكي «الشيطان فوق التلال» أيضاً، قصَّةَ صيف، صيفِ طُلَّابٍ مُراهقين تسمَرُّ جلودُهم تحت شمس تورينو المُلتهبة، حيثُ يستحمُّون عراةً ويثرثرون عن مُتعِ الصَّيد ومغازلةِ الفتيات الجميلات، فوق تلِّ الگريبّو. في حين يسعى ﭘولي، الشاب المُترف، للبحثِ عن معنى لحياته، بإدمانِ الكحول وتعاطي المخدّرات في فيلته على قمَّةِ التلّ، كما لو أنَّه يملأ فراغاً هائلاً في روحه. المَللُ، الخيانةُ، المشاعر المضطربةُ، كلُّها تبرزُ كقرون للشَّيطان في حياةٍ شبه أسطورية، عندما تتقاطعُ مصائرُ الجميع، في صيفٍ تُلهبُ فيه الشمسُ الغرائزَ، وتفوحُ منهُ رائحةُ الدَّم والموت.
الرواية التي حوَّلها المخرج الإيطالي ڤيتوريو كوتافاڤي إلى فيلم، بالعنوان ذاتهِ، وعُرض في مهرجان «كان» العام 1985؛ هي اللَّوحة الثانية من ثلاثيةِ باڤيزِه، والتي رسمها الكاتبُ الكبير بحسٍّ عالٍ ودِقَّةٍ مُتناهيةٍ، قبل أن يضعَ حدّاً لحياته.
من الكتاب:
- لأجل أن تنام، يجب أن تضاجع امرأة – قال ﭘيرَتّو – لذلك فلا المُسنّون ولا أنتُم تستطيعون النّوم.
- قد يكون كما قلتَ – تمتم أوريسته – ولكنْ، حتّى عندئذٍ سأغطّ في النوم.
- أنتَ لست ابن مدينة – قال ﭘيرَتّو – بالنسبة إلى شخص مثلكَ، ما زال الليل وافر الدلالات، كما كان ذات يوم. أنت أشبه بكلاب الحظيرة، أو بالدجاج.
تجاوزت الساعة الثانية بعد منتصف الليل، وكانت التلال تنتصب ما وراء نهر البو، وفي الجوّ شيء من البرد. نهضنا، واتّجهنا صوب مركز المدينة. وكنتُ أفكّر بقدرة ﭘيرَتّو الغريبة على الاعتداد بنفسه، وإظهارنا، أوريسته وأنا، على أننا ساذجان. فلا أنا ولا أوريسته، على سبيل المثال، نقضي الليل سهرًا من أجل النساء. وسألتُ نفسي، للمرّة الألف، عن طبيعة الحياة التي عاشها ﭘيرَتّو قبل قدومه إلى تورينو.
