عام 1994 ألّف باريكّو مونولوج «ألف وتسعمائة» الذي أخرجه للمسرح غابريلِّه فاشيس. وسرعان ما حصل المونولوج على ثناء الجمهور حتى صدر كتاباً مطبوعاً وتُرجم إلى لغات عدة. ثم قام المخرج الإيطالي الشهير جوزيبِّه تورناتورِّه بنقله إلى فيلم سينمائيّ بعنوان «أسطورة 1900 / عازف البيانو في المحيط» وأدى دور البطولة الممثل البريطاني تيم روث.
نجح الفيلم نجاحاً هائلاً، وأصبح هذا الكتاب من أكثر الكتب التي ترجمت إلى عدد هائل من اللغات.
وقصة الكتاب هي كما رواها صديق، عازف ترومبيت، على شكل مونولوج، عن دانّي بوودمان (ت.د. ليمون ألف وتسعمائة) عازف البيانو على متن عابرة المحيطات فيرجينيان. تلك الباخرة التي كانت تتنقل بين أمريكا وأوروبا محملة بأصحاب المليارات وبالمهاجرين في الوقت نفسه. وعلى متنها كلّ مساء، عازف بيانو استثنائي، صاحب تقنيات هائلة في العزف، يعزف هناك، للأغنياء وللفقراء. يقولون إن قصته مجنونة جداً، وإنه ولد على متن الباخرة وإنه لم يطأ الأرض أبداً، ولا أحد يعرف لماذا!
