يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى تعريف أشكال المونولوج في كل الدراما الشعرية والشعر الدرامي، لدى نماذج من شعراء العربية المعاصرين، ومتى يلجأ الشاعر إلى استخدام أي من هذه الأشكال؟ وكيف يؤثر ذلك في البناء الدرامي أو بنية القصيدة؟ وذلك من خلال تحليل المونولوج داخل هذه الأعمال لتحديد طبيعته وأشكاله المختلفة في كل من اللونين ومدلول ذلك الاختلاف عند كل شاعر. وذلك عن طريق إجراء دراسة موازنة بين أشكال المونولوج من نصوص مختارة من المسرحيات الشعرية، وأخرى من القصائد الدرامية لبعض الشعراء العرب المحدثين الذين برزوا في هذين المجالين والتي تحمل أعمالهم قدراً من التباين المطلوب في مثل تلك الدراسة وهم: صلاح عبد الصبور، وعبد الرحمن الشرقاوي، وأمل دنقل، من خلال تناول مسرحيات: الأميرة تنتظر، ومأساة الحلاج، وليلى والمجنون، ومسافر ليل لصلاح عبد الصبور، والفتى مهران، وثأر الله لعبد الرحمن الشرقاوي. فضلاً عن بعض القصائد الدرامية المختارة لكل من الشاعرين أمل دنقل وصلاح عبد الصبور.
وقد أجريت هذه الدراسة -وبشكل عام- باتباع المنهج الجمالي التحليلي، وهو المنهج الذي يعنى بدراسة النص، مركزاً بالدرجة الأولى على تناول الشكل الفني داخل القصيدة من الوجهة الجمالية على أنه النسق الذي يفجر الدلالة وينظمها، دون اللجوء إلى التفسيرات الأخرى الخارجة عن النص.
