من أصعب الأمور التي يواجهها الإنسان في حياته هو تركه للوطن؛ لكن ماذا لو كان هذا الوطن مجرَّد سفينة ؟ لم يعرف الطفل الصغير الذي وُجد وليدًا في قاع السفينة فرجينيا وطنًا غيرها، فقد ولد هناك ولم يُعرف من هما أبويه أبدًا، فقام العامل الذي وجده برعايته وتربيته بعد أن أطلق عليه اسم 1900 وهو العام الذي وُلدَ فيه. ينشأ الفتى وحيدًا على متن سفينةٍ تتغيَّر فيها الوجوه دومًا ويقضي مع من أصعب الأمور التي يواجهها الإنسان في حياته هو تركه للوطن؛ لكن ماذا لو كان هذا الوطن مجرَّد سفينة ؟ لم يعرف الطفل الصغير الذي وُجد وليدًا في قاع السفينة فرجينيا وطنًا غيرها، فقد ولد هناك ولم يُعرف من هما أبويه أبدًا، فقام العامل الذي وجده برعايته وتربيته بعد أن أطلق عليه اسم 1900 وهو العام الذي وُلدَ فيه. ينشأ الفتى وحيدًا على متن سفينةٍ تتغيَّر فيها الوجوه دومًا ويقضي معظم أوقاته في الدّرجة الأولى، مما دفعه إلى تعلّم عزف البيانو وإتقانه حتى اشتهر بذلك خارج السفينة ووصل صيته إلى البرّ ودُعيَ لإحياء الحفلات، لكنّه لم يجرؤ على مغادرة وطنه الصّغير! فهل تستطيع امرأةٌ إجباره على مغادرته أم أنّه سيتشبَّث به حتّى اللحظة الأخيرة؟ هل هو الوفاء للوطن أم الخوف من العالم الكبير خارجه؟ لكن هذه القصّة حدثت أواخر القرن التاسع عشر فما الذي أعاد بطلها إلى الأحاديث اليومية لسكّان المدينة ؟!
