«المدينة» هي رواية بثلاث حكايات، تتداخل فيما بينها، بدون حواجز أو فواصل، وتنساب كثلاثة أنهر متوازية، وتتشعب منها حكايات أخرى وشخصيات عديدة. الحكاية الرئيسة الأولى هي حكاية غولد ومدبرة منزله شيتزي شيل. غولد طفل عبقري هجره والداه، يعيش برفقة شيتزي شيل وصديقين من صنع خياله، أحدهما عملاق لا تسعه سيارة والآخر أبكم «يتحدث». تنساب من خيال غولد حكاية الملاكم ليري غورمان ومدربه مونديني، حكاية تولد وتتطور أحداثها فقط حينما يكون غولد جالساً في المرحاض. أما من خيال شيتزي شيل فتنساب حكاية الويسترن في الغرب الأمريكي، وتحكي قصة مدينة مزقت الريحُ فيها الزمن، وضاعت أقدار الناس ومصائرهم في غبارها.
بينما القارئ يطالع «المدينة» ويتنقل فيها من حكاية إلى أخرى، يشعر وكأنه سائح في أرجاء مدينة ما، ينتقل من حي إلى آخر، ومن شارع إلى آخر، حيث الأحياء قصص والشوارع شخوصها.
