وميزته أنه يقدم قراءة مزدوجة عن الإسلام الأول من داخله وخارجه معاً، معتمداً في المقام الأول على النقوش والوثائق والنصوص المبكرة، سواء منها المكتوبة بالعربية أو السريانية أو اليونانية، بحيث استحق عنوانه: تأسيس الإسلام بين الكتابة والتاريخ.
