في هذا الكتاب من مجموعة "ديوان الأساطير"، عرضٌ عن الموت والعبث والحياة الأبدية، يتدرّج عبر المواضيع الرئيسية التالية:
1- موت الآلهة بين التحوّل والبعث
موت الإله دوموزي / تموز.
دور إنانّا/ عشتار في تسليمه للموت ثم البكاء عليه.
إنانّا تبتدع قربة الماء في البادية، ضماناً لعودة دوموزي.
2- العالم السفلي، بلد الظلمات واللاعودة
ملكة العالم السفلي تأسر إنانّا/ عشتار وتفرض لتحريرها تسليم بديلٍ منها.
أنكيدو رفيق جلجامش، يستولي عليه العالم السفلي بعد حلم رآه ينذر بموته.
الإله نرجال يأسره غرام ملكة العالم السفلي، فيتخلّى عن سمائه ليصبح ملكاً عليه.
3- البعث والحياة الأبدية
بعث وعودة كل من دوموزي/ تموز وبعل وأوزيريس ومردوك، ومفهوم القيامة والخلاص.
موت مردوك وبعثه المظفّر في عيد رأس السنة في بابل.
نص ملحمة جلجامش في سعيه وراء الحياة الأبدية.
4- العصر البطولي في سومر والحرب
من مبارزة بطلين إلى حرب الدمار الشامل.
الحرب والدمار والواقع التاريخي.
نص ملحمة إيرّا إله الدمار.
