نشر الفينيقيون حضارتهم في حوض المتوسط، وكان لهم دورهم في نقل بلاد اليونان الى مرحلة حضارية ورثها عند الغرب ونشأ على مرتكزاتها متناسياً جذورها، فمعظم مؤرخي الغرب المعاصرين ابتدعوا لبلاد اليونان تاريخاً بنوه على العنصرية والتعصب العرقي، جعلهم يهملون وينكرون الدور الفينيقي في الحضارة اليونانية، واعتبروا أن الحضارة اليونانية وحدها مصدر الحضارة الغربية الحديثة، لذلك كان لا بد من إنصاف فينيقي المتوسط ورد الإعتبار اليهم ولدورهم الحضاري، كما يحاول الإجابة عن أسئلة في غاية الأهمية: الى أي مدى عرف الكنعانيون (وهم فينيقيو المستقبل) المباريات الرياضية؟ وهل أدت ممارسة الفينيقيين للمباراة الرياضية في منطقة (أولمبي) اليونانية الى الألعاب الأولمبية ثم العالمية؟ وهل الفينيقيون الذين نقلوا الأبجدية الى بلاد اليونان هم الذين، في الوقت نفسه، نقلوا اليها تقليد الألعاب الأولمبية التي اشتهرت بها البلاد الإغريقية منذ نهاية القرن الثامن قبل الميلاد؟
