رواية "عدوّي الحميم" وهي حسب إشارة المترجم، أقصر روايات كاذر، وهناك قصص قصيرة لها أطول منها، ولكنّها أفضل مقدّمة لأعمالها .. هنا بلغت كاذر درجةً عالية من الإتقان والبراعة والحساسيّة اللغويّة، تفتقر إليها معظم أعمالها الأولى، بما فيها ثلاثيّتها الروائيّة الأشهر "ثلاثية السهول الكبرى". لا نجد هنا جغرافيا كاذر المعتادة، أي نبراسكا وباقي ولايات السهول الكبرى الأميركيّة، بل ننتقل إلى نيويورك، ونتلمّس اختلاف المدن الكبرى عن المدُن والبلدات الصغيرة. لا يزال للطبيعة حضورٌ بارزٌ (فهذه إحدى مزايا أدبها المذهلة)، ولكنّ التركيز صار جوّانيّاً، سيكولوجياً، أكثر من كونه ظاهرياً. نبدو هنا، في بعض فصول الرواية، وكأنَّنا نقرأ أناشيد قصيدة مَلحميّة، حيث التراجيديا والآلهة والصّراع، مع أنّ المكان والزمان ثابتان.
يواصل المترجم: نقرأ في "عدوّي الحميم" تراجيديا ورومانس في آن (كما تشير الروائيّة والناقدة البريطانية أ. س. بيات)، وإن أضفنا اللمسة الشعريّة الشّفيفة غير المفرطة، سنكون أمام إحدى أعذب روايات الأدب الأميركيّ الذي لم يُقدَّم عربياً كما يستحقّ.
ونقرأ للروائيّة والناقدة الإنكليزية أ. س. بيات الرأي التالي: "في رواية عدوّي الحميم ... كلّ فصل موجَز يشكّل بوحًا عن شيء جديد وغير متوقّع. إنّه كتاب هادئ وعنيف. ما من كلمة مهدورة أو زائدة ... تُدرك الكاتبة الحكاية التي تحكيها كليًا، من حيث بدايتها إلى نهايتها".
بل يذهب الناقد الأميركيّ البارز هارولد بلوم، إلى القول: "ستّ روايات مُكرَّسة] خلال أقل من عقدين [رقمٌ استثنائيٌّ بالنسبة إلى أيّ كاتب أميركيّ حديث؛ لا يخطر لي إلا فوكنر كنظيرٍ لويلّا كاذر في هذا السيّاق، بما أنّه ألّف ستّ روايات خالدة، نُشرت كلّها في سنواته العظيمة بين عامي 1929-1939".
