"حين غادرنا الوطنَ كنّا خمسة أفراد وعشر حقائب. أعرف ما في الحقائب جيّداً، كما أعرف ألم الأفراد الخمسة ونزيفهم وهم يرحلون إلى المجهول. كان في الحقائب ملابس الأفراد الخمسة، أوانٍ منزلية، وبهارات هندية، وما يظنّ الأفراد أنهم لن يعثروا عليه في غربتهم. ما سُمح لي بأن أصطحبه معي من مكتبتي الضخمة. أربعة مجلّدات لا غير: المتنبّي في جزءين، ومحمود درويش في مجلّد، ومجلّد من مجلّدات العقد الفريد. تلك هي المكتبة كلّها التي سأعيش عليها سنوات الغربة التي قد تمتدّ لزمن لا أعرفه. حين استقرّ بي المقام في بيت صغير على جادة "نوريس" في مدينة أوتاوا، وضعت المجلّدات على أرضية الخشب المصقول، فلم يكن البيت مفروشاً، وجلستُ أتأمّلها دون ردّة فعل واضحة".
