اجتاحت العالم الغربي وتبع ذلك الدول النامية موجة تدعو لتبني الرأسمالية بصورتها القديمة تحت مسمى الليبرالية الإقتصادية الجديدة أي إقتصاد السوق الحر بصورته القديمة التي لا تخلو من وحشية وذلك بإعتباره منهجاً لتحقيق التنمية.
وبدأت بعض الدول مثل مملكة البحرين، وغيرها منذ ما بعد عام 2000م يتبني هذا التوجه، وبدأت حمى الخصخصة وتخلي الدولة عن بعض القطاعات الخدمية.
هذه الموجة لقيت تجاذبات مجتمعية حيالها، ولكن الغريب أن تقف بعض التيارات اليسارية موقف التأييد من هذا التوجه، مع انها تنتمي فكرياً للفكر الماركسي المناقض التام للرأسمالية.
