بعد أسبوع من وفاة (كيميا)، اختفى شمس الدين، وهذه المرة للأبد.. هناك نظريات عدة تتعلق باختفائه. تميل إحداها إلى التعميم، لأنه أكثر درامية، فتشير إلى مقتله بإيعاز من علاء الدين. لكن لا يوجد ما يعزّز هذه الرواية. يضرب سلطان ولد، في قصيدته المتعلقة بسيرة والده، صفحاً عن هذه الفكرة. وينادي ثلة من مؤرخي الأحداث بأن شمس الدين قد عاد إلى تبريز، بينما يذكر مصدر أن وفاة شمس الدين قد وقعت في مدينة خوي بدرب عودته إلى تبريز.
