لم أطلب إلى أولئك الناس الذين طلبوا إلي أن أصبر وأكافح أن يتحملوا عني بعض أعباء الحياة، ولو أن واجب الصداقة وأوامر الدين الحنيف تطلب ذلك. غير أني رجوت منهم أن يساعدوني برأيهم في وحشتي، فيدلوني على نوع من السلاح الذي يجب أن أحمله ويعينوا لي العدو الذي أقاتله. فإني لرجل له معدة كمعدهم تطلب الطعام في مواعيد منتظمة، وله جلد كجلودهم لابد له من الحماية.. لا، لا، سنسمع منهم، ولن نطيعهم، كل هذا سخف، هؤلاء الناس إنما يهزأون مني، إن كنز صبري الغني قد نضب ولم يبق في قوس التجلد منع ولا في رقعته مرتقع. فلأترك برلين للبرلينيين وللأجانب من أكلة النار والزجاج. أنا أطلب من برلين المستحيل ولكن أين المفر؟ إلى آكلي لحوم البشر؟ إلى نيام نيام؟ إلى مملكة الباب؟ أنا لا أطلب إلا عملا. أحصل من ورائه على سقف فوق رأسي وخبز وكتاب. أصاحب مطامع انا؟ لا. فلم يبق أمامي إلا الرحيل أو انتظار وقوع معجزة.
