لم يكن ممكنًا لمن شاهدوا ذلك العرض المسرحي المدرسي أن يخطر ببالهم أن الطالب الذي يُمثل دور «يوليوس قيصر»، أو يصرخ متألما بعبارته الشهيرة: «حتى أنت يا بروتس»، سوف يلقى مصيرًا مماثلًا في قابل الأيام؛ حين يتنكر له بعض رجاله ويطعنون فيه.
لماذا صعد مشروعه، وكيف خذله نظامه؟ السؤال ضروري بأي نظر جدي إلى المستقبل. بصياغة أخرى لنفس السؤال: إلى أي حد يتحمل «عبد الناصر» مسئولية ما انتهت إليه تجربته، وما تبناه من آليات حكم ناقضت مشروعه؟
هذا الكتاب محاولة لإعادة قراءة التجربة مشروعًا ونظامًا وإرثًا وصراعًا، امتد عبر العقود حتى ثورة «يناير» وما بعدها إلى عقود أخرى لا يعرف أحد عددها. قراءة وليست تأريخًا، رؤية لمستقبل وليست تحليقا في ماضٍ.
التاريخ هو مادة المستقبل بقدر ما تساعد قراءته على بناء التصوُّرات وإحكامها بأكبر قدر ممكن من الموضوعية دون تبرير لخطأ، أو اندفاع بمشاعر.
الموضوعية طريقة نظر تقدر وتنصف وفق حقائق العصر الذي جرت فيه الحوادث. بالوثائق والشهادات وبعضها شبه مجهول، وبعضها الآخر ليس في العلم العام أنه موجود، حاولت بناء رؤية في عصر جديد لأهم تجربة عربية في التاريخ الحديث، وأكثرها إثارة للجدل – كأنه نظرة في المرآة لقوتها وتجاعيدها.
