إنَّ الذين يجدون الدِينَ مُمِلّاً، أو لا حجة إليه أو مُهيناً لن يروا في عنوان كتابي عائقاً.
إنَّ هذا الكتاب ليس عن الله بل عن الأزمة التي نشأت عن إختفائه الواضح، والخوض في هذا الموضوع يبدأ بعصر التنوير وينتهي مع بروز الإسلام المتطرِّف وما يُسمّى بالحرب على الإرهاب.
وأبدأ بإظهار نجاة الله من عقلانية القرن الثامن عشر، وأنتهي مع إختفائه المُفاجئ من عصرنا المُفترَض أنه بلا إيمان، والسرد الذي لجأتُ إليه، بالإضافة إلى أشياء أخرى، يتّصل بحقيقة أنَّ الإلحاد ليس سهلاً كما يبدو.
لطالما كان الدِّين إحدى الوسائل القوية لتبرير السلطة السياسية، ولا شك في أنَّ من السُحف إختزاله إلى هذه الوظيفة، فإنْ كان قد قدَّم إعتذاراً جباناً إلى السلطة، فإنه أيضاً عمل بين حين وآخر عمل الشوكة في جنبها.
لكنّ الله لعبَ دوراً حيوياً في الحفاظ على السلطة السياسيّة بحيث إنَّ ضعف دوره في عصر عِلمانيّ لا يمكن حتى لمَنْ لديهم أوهى إيمان به أنْ يُرحّبوا بذلك الضعف بإتزان.
ولذلك، بدءاً بفكر عصر التنوير وحتى الفن الحديث، تتولّى سلسلة كاملة من الظواهر مهمّة التزويد بأشكالٍ بلدية للتسامي، لتملأ الفجوة التي كان يشغلها الله سابقاً، إنَّ جزءاً من حجّتي هو أن أشد البدائل قُدرة كان الثقافة، بالمعنى الأوسع وليس الضيق للكلمة.
