لقد تسبَّبَ الدِّين ببؤس لا يوصَف في الشؤون الإنسانية. في أغلب الأحيان كان حكاية تُثير الاشمئزاز عن التعصّب الأعمى، والتطيُّر، والتمنّي، والفِكر المُستبد. لذلك فأنا أكنُّ الكثير من التعاطُف مع نُقّاده العقلانيين والإنسانيين. ولكن يقول هذا الكتاب أيضاً إنَّ غالبية هؤلاء النقّاد يرفضون الدِّين بسهولة. وعندما يتعلّق الأمر بالعهد الجديد، على الأقلّ، فإنَّ ما يكتبون عادة لا يعدو كونه صورة كاريكاتيرية لا قيمة لها للشيء الحقيقي، متأصّلاً في قدرٍ من الجهل والتحامُل تماشياً مع ما يحتويه الدِّين. تماماً كرفض المساواة بين الجنسين على أساس آراء كلينت إيستوود فيها. إنني في هذا الكتاب أُجادلُ الجهل والتحامُل. فإنْ كان اليسار اللاأدري لا يتحمَّل الكسل الفكري عندما يتعلّق الأمر بالكتب المقدسة اليهودية والمسيحية، فذلك ليس فقط لأنَّ مواجهة الخصم شديد الإقناع يستلزم العدالة والصدق، بل أيضاً لأنَّ الراديكاليين قد يكتشفون بعض الأشياء البصيرة القيّمة في التحرُّر الإنساني، في منطقةٍ يقفُ فيها اليسار السياسي وهو في أمسّ الحاجة إلى الأفكار الجيدة. إنني لا أدعو مثل هؤلاء القرّاء إلى الإيمان بهذه الأفكار أكثر من إيماني بالملاك جبريل، وبعصمة البابا، وبفكرة أنَّ يسوع مشى على الماء، أو بالادّعاء بأنه ارتفعَ إلى السماء أمام عيون مُريديه. فإذا حاولت في هذا الكتاب أنْ «أقول من بطني» ما أعتبره نسخة المزمور المسيحي المتعلِّق بالراديكاليين والإنسانيين، فلا أرغب في أنْ يُساء فهمي ويُقال عني إني أبله. لكنَّ الكتب المقدّسة اليهودية والمسيحية لديها الكثير لتقول كإجابة عن بعض المسائل الحيوية -كالموت، والمُعاناة، والحب، وإنكار الذات، وما شابهها -التي يَلزَم اليسار الصمتَ المُربِك حيال معظمها. لقد حان الوقت لإنهاء هذا الحياء السياسي المُعيق
