وجدت نفسها مغطّاة بملاءة بيضاء نقية، على أرض صحراء باردة، وحولها نساء خائفات تغطيهن ملاءات سوداء، ويقفن هنّ جميعًا مشدوهات يشاهدن الساحر، وهو يتلاعب بالرمال، تطير حوله، وبين يديه، ومن هول جماله، ومهاراته لا يتحرّكن، أو ينطقن، وفي إصبع أريج دبلة، تقبض عليها، وتحفظها، وتسترها بملائتها البيضاء.
وأثناء عرض الساحر هبّت رياح عاتية دفعتها على الأرض، ووقعت الدبلة، وكادت أن تُدفن في أعماق الرمال، لولا أن قبضت عليها بكل ما تبقّى لها من قوة، ونظرت إليه، وهو يعرض سحره بضجر، وغضب، وأيضًا باستسلام جندي بذل مجهودًا مشرّفًا في أعظم الحروب"
