في مدينة وايمر –البلدة التي نشأ فيها بالمر- يعتبر بلغ سن العاشرة أهم حدث في حياة أي صبي. إنه اليوم الذي يكون فيه الصبي مستعدًّا لأن يأخذ مكانه مع أقرانه العصَّارين في الاحتفال السنوي للأسرة، فلذلك شرف وتقليد متعارف عليه.
لكن الحال لم يكن كذلك بالنسبة للفتى بالمر، الذي لم يكن يعتبر أن عيد ميلاده العاشر حدث يتطلع إليه بل حدث ما يخشاه؛ لأنه –ورغم عدم استطاعته الإفصاح عن ذلك لأحد- لم يكن يرغب في أن يكون قاصم رقاب للطيور، ولكنه لا يستطيع أن يوقف الزمن الذي سيصل به لا محالة إلى عمر العاشرة كما أنه لا يستطيع أن يمنع العادات والتقاليد.
