هذا هو كتاب الفوائد، الذي جمَع فيه مؤلفه ابنُ القيم- كعادته- درَرًا تَناثَرت، وجواهر عزت وندرت، ففيه من الحِكَم كلُّ نفيسة غالية، ومن الفوائدِ كل بهية عالية، فيراه القارئ، وقد جمَع إلى الحِكمة شبيهتها وإلى المقولة العَجيبة مَثيلتَها، في إتقان شديد ونظر سديد، كالبستانِ النَّضِر أو النسيم الـعَطِر؛ لا يملُّ منه قارئ ولا يزهد فيه مطالع.
فقد انبرى ابنُ القيم إلى آياتٍ من القرآن الكريم، فصاغ حولها من دُرر التفسير ودقائق التعبير ما يَعجِز عن مثلِه الأديب المتفنن، وغاص إلى المعاني غوصَ المبدع الماهر، وسبَح في طيَّاتها سباحةَ العاشق الساهر، فأتَى من ذلك بصورٍ بديعة وأساليب مبتكرة.
ثم انبرى إلى بعض الأحاديث النبوية فشمَّر عن ساعد الاجتهاد في توضيح المعاني، واستخراج الفوائد، وتفصيل المختصَر المحكَم، فأتى بالتعليقات اللطيفة، والتعبيرات الرائقة الشريفة.
ولم يكتفِ بالقرآن والسُّنة، بل دخل إلى رياض الحكمة وبساتين المواعظ وحدائق المعرفة، ليقطف من كل بستان زهرة، ومن كل روض وردةً عبقة، فتكلَّم عن الزهدِ والزهَّاد، والدنيا والمعاد، يبشِّرُ تارةً ويُنذِرُ أخرى، وهكذا سار في كتابه بين رغبة ورهبة، ووعد ووعيد، فحُقَّ لهذا الكتاب أن يسمى: «الفوائد»؛ فكلُّ ما فيه فوائد.
