عليّ بن العباس بن جرجس الرومي أبو الحسن الشهير بكنيته ابن الرومي صاحب هذا الديوان شاعر عباسي كبير. عاش في حقبة مضطربة سياسياً واجتماعياً من أحقاب دولته، بنفسٍ مرهفة الإحساس إلى حدّ المرض. وقد أدّى التفاعل بين ذلك المجتمع وتلك النفس إلى تفجر نبع الشاعرية لديه بلون قاتم من السخط والتشاؤم والشعور بالظلم والاضطهاد، مما جعله يكره نفسه ومن حوله، على قدر عشقه للحياة وملذاتها، واستنصار عهد الشباب المنقضي كحلم جميل. هذا التناقش الحافل بين عديد من المحاور، كالإقدام والحذر، والاختلاط والعزلة، والحب والكراهية، والاعتزاز والتواضع، والاستغناء والاستجداء، ضمن جغرافية واحدة تفجرت عن بركان من العواطف الحارة كالمهل الغزير الأسود بلون الشفاءة والبغض كلاٍّ في كلٍّ. وقد تم شرح ديوانه، لا لتبرئة ابن الرومي، ولا لإدانته، ولكن ليضح الشارح ملفّ أوراق ابن الرومي الضخمّ كرّة أخرى ليتصفحه قضاة العدالة والمنطق والأدب والذوق، وليلتمسوا لصاحبه العذر في هذا التردي إلى حمأة الرذيلة المرذولة بالإقذاع في هجاء الآخرين، وإدانتهم بلا موجب للإدانة سوى أنهم بشر.
