كان "ابن الرومي" نموذجاً لظاهرة التوليد في عصره، تلاقت في شخصيته عناصر غنيّة رومية أو يونانية، وفارسية وعربية، انعكست في حياته كرجل واتضحت معالمها في صنيعه كشاعر. وكان لمزاجه وعوامل حياته وعصره الأثر الأقوى في تكوين شاعريته بألوان بعدية عن الطراز العربي البدوي منه والحضري، فكان لذلك كله غريباً في سيرته وغريباً في فنّه وفي طريقة نظمه وأسلوب توليده المعاني، حتى غدا في نظر بعض النقاد أشبه بالطائر الذي يغرد خارج سربه. ذاك هو ابن الرومي علي بن العباس بن جريج الذي يجمع المحقق عمر فاروق الطباع ديوانه في هذا الكتاب ملقياً في مقدمته الضوء على سيرته وشعره وخصائص فنونه الرئيسية وأسلوبه ليكون هذا الكتاب أداة الحافز لسبر أغوار ديوانه وتذوق مراميه وألوانه.
