يثير الحديث عن المسرح العربي عدة مشاكل أولية لابد من تصفيها، وأولى تلك المشاكل تأتي من أن المسرح ليس فنًّا من فنون الأدب التقليدية، التي عرفها العرب القدماء وخلفوا لنا فيها تراثاً يشبه ما خلفوه في فنون الأدب الأخرى كفنون المدح والهجاء والرثاء والغزل والمقامات والخطب وما إليها من فنون الشعر والنثر التقليدية عند العرب.
على أن هذه الظاهرة لا تعفي المتحدث عن المسرح من البحث عما يمكن أن يكون لهذا الفن من أصول تاريخية بعيدة عند المصريين القدماء أو عند العرب بل ولا يعفيه من إيضاح الأسباب التي حالت دون ظهور هذا الفن عند العرب القدماء أو التي حالت دون أخذهم هذا الفن عن اليونان على نحو ما أخذوا عنهم الفلسفة والمنطق وبعض العلوم عند ازدهار .
