كان نابليون يثير في الأشخاص شعورًا من بين اثنين وهما إما كراهيته أو الولاء الخالص له، وكان كل ما يحيط به من أشياء تبدو كبيرةً وباذخةً وعظيمةً وخياليةً على نحوٍ لا يوصف على الرغم من أن صفاته الجسدية لم تكن توحي بتلك القوة والعظمة، فقد كان بشرته بيضاء جدًا حتى يبدو شاحبًا، ويداه كانتا صغيرتان وناعمتان، بينما كان رأسه يبدو كبيرًا بالنسبة إلى جسده حيث كان قصير القامة وقصير الرقبة، لكن تلك الصفات الجسدية لم تمنعه من أن يتمتع بشخصيةٍ شديدة التأثير وثقةٍ بالغةٍ في نفسه كانت تطغى على كل المظاهر الأخرى فيبدو رجلًا لا يقهر، وتلك الصفات هي ما جعلته قائدًا بالفطرة ومنحته موهبةً فريدةً في قيادة الجيوش مما أخذه إلى أعلى درجات المجد ثم إلى الهزيمة واليأس.
