من الصعب تحديد مهنة نيكولا تيسلا بكلمةٍ واحدة، فهو مخترعٌ وفيزيائيٌ ومهندس كهربائي ومهندس ميكانيكي ومحاضرٌ وباحثٌ، امتلك شغفًا لعلوم الكهرباء والفيزياء لا حدود له، ولد بموهبةٍ طبيعيةٍ تمكن من تطويرها على مدى سنواتٍ طويلةٍ من الدراسة والعمل المتواصل، اشتهر بتصميمه واستخدامه للتيار الكهربائي المتردد، وكانت لديه الكثير من المشاريع والأحلام والأفكار التي تمكن من تحقيق بعضها ولم يتمكن من تحقيق أخرى، وكان من أكبر أحلامه هو اختراع طريقةٍ لنقل الطاقة الكهربائية دون اسلاك وهذا ما كان ضربًا من الخيال قبل عهده.
لقد كانت أفكاره واختراعاته سابقةً لعصره على نحوٍ مدهشٍ حتى تكاد تكون بمثابة تنبؤاتٍ تحققت فعليًا مع ثورة التقدم التكنولوجي في القرن العشرين وما بعده، وكان صاحب عددٍ كبيرٍ من الأفكار والاكتشافات الرائعة والمدهشة وأهمها تقنيات التيار الكهربائي المتردد وملف تيسلا الكهربائي ومحرك الحثّ وكان لأبحاثه أثرٌ في اكتشاف تكنولوجيا الرادار والأشعة السينية وأجهزة التحكم عن بعد والحقل المغناطيسي الدوار، وما يثير الإعجاب حقيقةً أن فكرة تقنية الهواتف الذكية قد خطرت في باله في عام ألفٍ وتسعمائةٍ وواحد (1901) وتنبأ بتطويرها في المستقبل الذي لم تمتد حياته حتى يشهده بنفسه.
