فكرة المهدي والمهدوية لعبت دورًا كبيرًا في الإسلام من القرن الأول إلى اليوم. وسبب نجاحها يرجع إلى شيئين: الأول أن نفسية الناس تكره الظلم وتحب العدل، سنتهم في جميع الأزمنة والأمكنة، فإذا لم يتحقق العدل في زمنهم اشرأبت نفوسهم لحاكم عادل تتحقق فيه العدالة ، فمن الناس من لجأ إلى الخيال يعيش فيه وألَّف في ذلك اليوتوبيا أو المدن الفاضلة على حد تعبير الفارابي، فقد روى لنا في الشرق والغرب يوتوبيات كثيرة على نمط جمهورية أفلاطون.
ومنهم من نزع إلى الثورة يريد رفع هذه المظالم وتحقيق العدالة الاجتماعية في الدنيا الواقعة، فلما عجزوا عن تحقيقها أمَّلوها، وإذا جاءت هذه الفكرة عن طريق الدين كان الناس لها أكثر حماسة وغيرة وأملًا، فوجدوا في فكرة المهدي ما يحقق أملهم.
