ليس غريبا"القول أن ظاهرة العدوان واستخدام العنف في المجتمعات البشرية قديمة قدم الإنسان ذاته؛ فهي لصيقة بطبيعة وجوده، وشاهد على اعتلال بيئته واختلال علاقاته، ودليلا"على قصور وعيه وانتكاس أعرافه، ومؤشرا"على تقهقر معاييره وانحراف قيمه. ولكنه، وبرغم ذلك ورغما"عنه، ما أن يدلف إلى حظيرة الاجتماع الإنساني ليلجم نوازعه وينظم علاقاته من جهة، ويضع أولى خطواته على سلّم الحضارة ويلج عوالمها المتنوعة ويستبطن فضائلها المتعددة من جهة أخرى، حتى يشرع بتشذيب أنماط سلوكه، وتقويم معايير أخلاقه، ويهتم بتلطيف حدة طباعه، ويميل، من ثم، إلى الكفّ عن التطرف في ضروب الفكر والامتناع عن العنف في ميادين الواقع. بيد أن الغريب في هذه المسألة حقا"، هو أن يتحول العنف إلى واقعة مستديمة تتحكم بآفاق مصيره وتقرر مآل خياراته، الأمر الذي يتطلب البحث عن جذور تلك الظاهرة، ويستقصي عوامل تكوينها في المجتمعات المأزومة سياسيا"والمخترقة حضاريا"؛ لا في إطار الأوضاع القائمة والظروف الراهنة فحسب، التي قد توحي بأنها المسؤولة عن اندلاع تلك النزعات وانفلات زمامها وتفاقم ميولها، وإنما بالتنقيب عن بواعثها الاجتماعية المضمرة، والحفر في طبقاتها النفسية المخفية، والكشف عن ملابساتها السياسية المتقادمة. ذلك لأن ((العنف – كما يؤكد أحد علماء الاجتماع الغربيين- يقوم حيثما تخضع القيم والأهداف التي تخص فردا"أو جماعة، والتي تنطوي على معنى عام كلي، لقمع يمارسه حيالها فردا"آخر أو جماعة أخرى. وفي حال حدوث عنف ظاهر، واضطرابات اجتماعية أو ثورة.
