يناقشُ ثامر عباس في كتابه هذا " الهوية الملتبسة" مفاهيم عديدة تحيط بالشخصية العراقيّة ، منها – كما دلّ العنوان الفرعي – إشكاليّة الوعي بالذات ، حيثُ يقول :'إذا كان مفهوم (الهوية الوطنية) يشترطُ مسبقاً حصول تراكم ناجز في مقومات (الشخصية الإجتماعية) على وفق مستلزمات الضرورة التعاقبية ، فإنّ هذه الأخيرة بالمقابل لا تشترطُ مثل هذه الضرورة لكي يكتمل نصابُها وتتبلور بنيتها ، إلا وفقاً للسياق التزامني الذي يجمعُ بينها وبين المفهوم الأول'..
ومن موضوعةٍ حملت عنوان (تعظيمُ النحنُ وتأثيمُ الهُم) يقول عباس:'حين يواجه مجتمع من المجتمعات التقليدية – كما هو حال المجتمعات العربية عموماً والعراقيّ خصوصاً – المُبتلاة بالمشاكل والموبوءة بالإشكاليات ، أسئلةً حرجة تتعلق ليس فقط بوجودها الآني كواقع ، وإنما بمصيرها المستقبلي كتوقعٍ أيضاً ، لا يلبثُ (أناها) الجمعي وهو يبحث في ركام التأريخ وينقّب بين طيات الذاكرة ، عمّا يُسعفها للإجابة عمّا يكوّن ماهيّتها والإفصاح عمّا يشكّل كنهها'...
من أهمّ ما يميّز الكتاب هو أنّه كتابٌ اختصاصيّ في علم النفس والإجتماع من جهة ، و مُتاحٌ للقارئ الإعتياديّ من جهة أخرى ، نظراً لبساطة الأسلوب ، ومنطقيّة الطرح...
الكتاب ناقش العديد من الأفكار و الإتّهامات التي وُجّهتْ للشخصيّة العراقيّة على أيدي عددٍ كبير من الكتّاب ، خصوصاً نزعات التطرف ، و تقديس التأريخ ، وما سواها ، حيثُ يقف مع كلّ موردٍ من هذه الموارد وقفةً متأنيّة ، عبر منهجٍ من الطرح التأريخي والذي يستشفّ من خلاله ملامح كلّ حادثةٍ وردّة فعلٍ جمعيّة يقوم بها العراقيون..
هذا الكتاب اضافة مهمّة ، فليس هناك الكثير من المؤلفات التي ناقشتْ هذا الأمر ، وهذا الكتاب يقفُ جنباً إلى جنب مع الدراسات الحديثة الأنثروبولوجية العراقية
