«طبائع الاستبداد ومصارع الاستعباد» لعبد الرّحمن الكواكبي، وهو أحد مؤسّسي الفكر القومي العربي، وقد تناول في هذا الكتاب أشكال الاستبداد الذي رآه يتمثّل في الاستبداد السّياسي، وبحث في الاستبداد وصفته المنبوذة في الدّين، وعلاقته بالعلم واستبداد الجهل عليه، وتحقيق الأمم للمجد حينما تستطيع التخلّص منه، أما بالنسبة للمال فقد رأى أن تراكم الثروات المفرطة في يد فئاتٍ محدّدة يولِّد الاستبداد. تطرّق إلى الاستبداد من منظور أخلاقي، حيث أكد أنّه مُنافٍ للأخلاق والفطرة السّليمة، وأنه على التربية السّليمة أن تنشئ أفرادًا أنقياء من هذا السّلوك الذي من شأنه تدمير الأفراد والمجتمعات، وتأخير حركة النّهضة الفكريّة والاجتماعيّة لدى الشّعوب.
عانت الأمم العربية خلال النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر من الضعف والهوان، وهي فترة استولى فيها المستعمِر على حرّيّاتها، وقد عاش عبد الرحمن الكواكبي في هذه الفترة، ممّا دفعه للكتابة في هذا الشأن، وتقديم الحلول للتخلّص من الاستبداد، مثل الشورى الدستوريّة التي رأى فيها دواءً شافيًا لهذه العلّة.
