«الزّير سالم»، يتناول الكتاب سيرة عدي بن ربيعة التغلبي، الملقّب بـ الزّير، أبو ليلى المهلهل. هو أحد فرسان قبيلة تغلب، التي كانت شمال شرق الجزيرة العربيّة، أطراف العراق والشّام. شاعرٌ، وأحد أبطال العرب في الجاهليّة.
عُرف اسمه بين النّسّابين بـ عدي، لكن قيل أنّ اسمه سالم. سمّاه أخوه كُليب: زير النّساء، أي جليسهنّ. فصار لقبه الزّير، ولُقّب بـ المهلهل، لأنّه هلهَلَ الشّعرَ، أي أرقّه، وروي لأنّه كان يلبس ثيابًا مهلهلة.
لم يكن له من الأوﻻد ذكورًا، فنودي بـ أبو ليلى، بنته البكر. وهي أم الشّاعر كلثوم بن مالك، صاحب المعلّقة الشّهيرة. وله ابنة أخرى يقال لها عبيدة، وقد اختلف الرواة في أسماء بناته، مع إجماعهم أنّ له من الذرّيّة بنتان فقط، فقالوا ليلى وعبيدة، و سلمى وسليمى، أو هند وعبيدة.
أُعتبرت أشعارَه وسيلةً للتحريض على الثأر، بّث حزنَه وشكواه في رثاء أخيه، ظلّ يصف دموعَه وتقرّح جفونه، يذكر محاسن أخيه، وبعضًا من مآثره، حتى ﻻ تنشغل القبيلة عن فجيعته.
