يُقدّم العقّاد في كتابه هذا دراسةً شاملة عن الضّحك وأهمّيته، ويعرض آراء بعض الفلاسفة والعلماء عن الضّحك وأسبابه النّفسية والبيولوجية، ويتحدّث كذلك عن الضحك في الكتب السماوية، ويتحدّث عن نظرة النّاس إلى الضّحك، ذاكرًا بعض النوادر من تراث الأمم، كما يقدّم تحليلًا لإحدى الشخصيات التاريخية الضّاحكة المضحكة، وهي شخصية جحا، ويعرض أشهر نوادر هذه الشخصية.
والعقّاد هو عباس محمود العقاد؛ أديب، وشاعر، ومؤرّخ ، وفيلسوف مصريّ، كرّسَ حياته للأدب، كما أنّه صحفيٌّ له العديد من المقالات، وقد لمع نجمه في الأدب العربيّ الحديث، وبلغ مرتبةً رفيعة.
ولد العقاد في محافظة أسوان سنة 1889، في أسرةٍ بسيطة الحال، فاكتفى بالتّعليم الابتدائيّ، ولكنّه لم يتوقّف عن سعيه الذّاتيّ للعلم والمعرفة، فقرأ الكثير من الكتب.
وقد ألّف ما يزيد على مئة كتاب، وتُعدّ كتب العبقريّات من أشهر مؤلّفاته.
توفّي سنة 1964، تاركًا خلفه ميراثًا أدبيًّا زاخرًا.
