يطرح هذا الكتاب الذي ألفه "أندرو ديكسون وايت" بين صفحاته السؤال الذي يتردد دائماً منذ القدم: هل يوجد عداء بين العلم بتطورّه المستمر، وبين الدين بنصوصه الثابتة؟ حيث يستعرض الكتاب ثلاثاً من القضايا العلمية الكبرى، التي كان لها ضجّات تاريخية كبيرة، أحدثت دوياً في البلاط الكنسي وهزته في القرون الوسطى، حتى وصل الأمر باتهام جميع أصحابها بأنّهم ضالين، ويجب الحكم عليهم بالموت، ويعرض الكاتب في الفصل الأول العديد من النظريات العلمية المتعلقة بالكون وعلم الفلك، وكيف أن هذه النظريات قد تصادمت مع التفسيرات الظاهرة التي قدمها اللاهوتيين للنصوص الدينية المقدسة، أما في الفصل الثاني فقد عرض الكاتب النظريات الحديثة التي أثبتها العلم حول تكوين الأرض وجغرافيتها، وكيف أن تلك النظريات لاقت الكثير من الحروب والصدود والرفض، وفي نهاية الكتاب يتطرق الكاتب إلى واحدة من النظريات المهمة التي أثارت الكثير من الجدل حتى وقتنا هذا، وهي نظرية "النشوء والتطور"، ليكتشف القارئ في النهاية أن الصراع المزعوم هو نتيجة تلك التفسيرات المتشددة للدين وبين العلم، وليس العكس.
