يوضح الإمام محمد عبده في كتابه "الإسلام بين العلم والمدنية" أنَّ الإسلام لا يتعارض مع الحضارة والعلم بل حث على طلبه، إذ يبرز في هذا النصأصول الإسلام وما أنتجته من نموذج حضاري متميز ومن علاقة متميزة بين الدولة والدين.
ومن الأصول التي يناقشها المفكر: النظر العقلي لتحصيل الإيمان، تقديم العقل على ظاهر الشرع عند التعارض، البعد عن التكفير، الاعتبار بسنن الله في الخلق، قلب السلطة الدينية.
وبين محمد عبده أنّ الإسلام حفز على طلب العلم في كل مكان، مؤكداً أنَّ علماء الدّين ليس لهم سلطان ديني على الأفراد، والخليفة عند المسلمين ليس بالمعصوم ولا هو مهبط الوحي ولا من حقه الاستئثار بتفسير الكتاب والسنة ،كما أنَّ كل مسلم يمكنه أن يفهم كتاب الله دون وسيط من سلف أو خلف وفق ما تؤهله معرفته فإن لم يسمح له إلمامه بالعربية وآدابها وأساليبها، فعليه أن يسأل العارفين، وأن يطالبهم بالدليل على قولهم.
ويتطرَّق الكاتب إلى مسألة المعجزات فيبين أنَّ الإسلام لم يتَّخذ من خوارق العادات دليلاً على أنَّ الحق لغير الأنبياء عليهم الصلاة والسلام، ولم ترد فيه كلمة واحدة تشير إلى أنَّ الداعين إليه يمكنهم أن يغيروا شيئا من سنة الله في الخليقة.
