وفي إطار التغيير والتنويع في شخصيته، تبدو الرحلة أمراً بديهياً في حياة الحوماني الذي ما عرف هدوءاً ولا استكانة، ولا قرّ له قرار، بل كان دائم الترحال والتجوال، يقطع المسافات ويجوب الأقطار ويخوض عباب البحار، وله في كل قارةٍ وقفة، وفي كل مدينة بصمة؛ فمن دمشق إلى عمّان، ومن بغداد إلى وهران، ومن القاهرة إلى مدراس ومن نيويورك إلى لندن وبرن وباريس... مدن وعواصم وقارات، أكسبته لقب "رحّالة" أطلقه عليه كثيرون من عارفيه ومعاصريه، وإن كان هو قد سبقهم إلى خلعه على نفسه حين قال: "أنا هذا الرحّالة العالمي... أنا هذا الذي شرّق في الأرض حتى أشرف على الصين وغرّب حتى هبط بلاد السكسون، ثم أمعن في غربته حتى خاض بحر الظلمات إلى أمريكا، شمالها وجنوبها وما بين هذين ثم... أحدق بأفريقيا وطوقها... أنا هذا الشيخ الذي قطع الربيع من حياته يجوب قطراً ويغادر قطراً"
تُرى ما هي الأهداف من كل هذا، وما هي الغايات؟ هل هي تحقيق للذات؟ أم هي غوصٌ لكشف المجهول؟ أم هي المتعة وتفريج الكرب في الإرتحال الموصول؟ أم تُراها لدى الشاعر هموم نفسٍ وشؤون وشجون؟!
مهما يكن، فإن من يقف على سيرة الحوماني ويتتبّع أخباره، يلاحظ أن تلك الرحلات التي قام بها لم تكن جميعها ذات طبيعةٍ واحدة، ولا ذات غرضٍ واحد، إنما هي متعدّدة العوامل والأسباب، متباينة المقاصد والأهداف.
