يتناول الكاتب الإيراني "علي الدشتي" في هذا الكتاب حقبة الرسالة المحمدية، الممتدة ثلاثة وعشرون عاماً، بدءاً من نزول الوحي على النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وحتى وفاته. فيقدم اجتهادات جديدة في قراءة نقدية لكل التصورات الرائجة عن تلك الفترة، وكذلك عن شخص الرسول. مقارناً بين الروايات والنصوص المعروفة والمعتمدة، كما يقدم قراءة بطريقة عقلانية للنص القرآني، راصداً تطور الخطاب الإلهي بالتوازي مع انتشار الدعوة وازدياد مؤيديها وتمكنهم بقيادة الرسول من الاستقلال وتحقيق الانتصارات، عارضاً رأيه في صياغة بعض الآيات وفي معانيها، وكذلك في أسباب وكيفية تدوينها وترتيبها.
ومن خلال اعتماده فكرة بشرية محمد، التي يستشهد عليها بآيات قرآنية وأحاديث نبوية، يتمكن من تناول الكثير من القضايا والمسائل مثل المعجزات، والحكم، والنساء، والجن، والسحر، وغيرها. بصورة موضوعية ومختلفة عما هو سائد.
