هذا الكتاب هو " الجامع المختصر من السنن عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ومعرفة الصحيح والمعلول وما عليه العمل " المشهور بـ " جامع الترمذي " أو " سنن الترمذي " ويعد الكتاب جامعاً لأصول المسائل والأحكام الفقهية ، وقد ضمنه مؤلفه الإمام " محمد بن عيسى بن سورة بن موسى بن الضحاك ... الترمذي ، الضرير " ولد سنة ( 209ه ) وتوفي سنة ( 279ه ) - صاحب التصانيف النافعة في علم الحديث ، الأحاديث المشاهير ، ولم يورد فيه الغرائب ، وقسمه على الأبواب الفقهية ، فبدأ بكتاب الطهارة ، وأتبعه بكتاب الصلاة ، ... إلى أن انتهى إلى كتاب الأدب ، كما جمع في " سننه " هذه بالإضافة إلى السنن الواردة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ما يناسب المقام مما أُثِرَ عن الصحابة الكرام من اجتهاداتهم واختياراتهم .
وعليه فكتاب الإمام أبي داود الترمذي يأتي في المرتبة الثالثة بعد " الصحيحين " ، فقد تحوّل أهل العلم على ما دوّنه فيه من أحاديث وآثار جاءت بالسند المتصل إلى الإمام الترمذي .
يتضمن الكتاب ( 415 ) حديثاً ، ومعه الشمائل المحمدية ( 56 ) باباً في خلق رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو طبعة جديدة ، مصححة مع استدراك أحاديث سقطت من الطبعات السابقة ، مُرقمة ، مُذيّلة بأرقام مكرّرات وطرق الحديث ، ومخرجة الأحاديث مع الحكم عليها ، مع شرح الغريب ، وتعليقات مفيدة ، مصدرة بمقدمة علمية ، ومذيّلة بفهارس عامة ، خرّج أحاديث الكتاب وعلّق عليه : عز الدين ضلّي ، وعماد الطيّار ، وياسر حسن ، مع التنويه إلى أن الذي دفع الترمذي إلى تصنيف كتابه هذا هو " أنه أراد أن يجمع الأدلة التي استدل بها الفقهاء من الأحاديث والآثار ، فيتكلم ويكشف عن عللها ، ويبيّن حالها من الصحة والضعف " .
