نشأ الحماني في بيت مُعْرِقٍ في الشعر، فقد كان يقول: "أنا شاعر، وأبي شاعر، وجدي شاعر، وأبو جدي شاعر إلى أبي طالب". وليس في قوله مبالغة أو ادعاء، فقد وصل من شعر أبيه محمد بن جعفر مقطعات، وعرف جدّه جعفر بالشاعر. كان شعر الحماني مجموعاً في ديوان بقي متداولاً حتى القرن التاسع. وهو موزع على أغراض عديدة منها الشكوى، والفخر، والغزل، والرثاء، والاخوانيات، والسياسة، والعقيدة، ولكن الاتجاهين الأخيرين كانا أغلب على شعره، حتى أن القارئ ليجد العقيدة الشيعية الزيدية غالبة على بعض اخوانياته فكان شعر الحماني صدى أمين لعصره من الناحية الفنية فضلاً عن الناحية التاريخية.
وقد جمع المحقق في هذا الكتاب من شعر الحماني ما وصلت إليه يده، ورتبه على القوافي، مقسماً إياه إلى قسمين: أحدهما شعره الذي لم يشاركه في نسبته إليه أحد، وثانيهما المنسوب إليه. ثم قسم هذا المنسوب على قسمين أيضاً: أولهما القسم الذي ترجع عنده نسبته إليه، وثانيهما ما لم يترجح نسبته إليه. وقد كان هذا الترجيح مبنياً على أسس عديدة منها: قدم المصدر، ونَفَسُ الشاعر وأسلوبه، والإجماع أو ما يشبه الإجماع على النسبة.
