المصنوع فى اللغة" كتاب يهدف إلى بيان ظاهرة الألفاظ والأبنية المصنوعة فى كلام العرب من خلال تتبعها فى معاجم اللغة وكتبها، ويرصد الكتاب دلالة كلمة (المصنوع) ومفهومها، ثم ينطلق إلى تبيان أسباب وضع المصنوع، التى كان منها: استظهار الإكثار من الرواية، وإرادة اللبس والتعنيت على الناس لبيان التفرد والتميز، ورغبة القبيلة فى اللحاق بغيرها من القبائل فى سباق الوقائع والأشعار، وشغل المجالس بالحكايات والأشعار والألغاز والنكات اللطيفة. بعد ذلك ينتقل إلى تبيان أسباب رواية المصنوع فى كتب الثقات، التى كان منها: احترامهم لمن سمعوا منه، أو رَوَوْا عنه، من العلماء الأجلاء، وإثبات الرواية كما جاءت لبيان دقة الأمانة فى نقل الأخبار مع نقدها علميًّا، وبيان أمر المصنوع حتى لا يُتداول بين الناس، ثم يذكر الكتاب بعد ذلك مَنْ أعرض من العلماء عن رواية المصنوع. ويَشْرَعُ الكتاب بعد ذلك في ذِكْرِ أسباب وَسْمِ المصنوع بهذا الْوَسْمِ، التى كان منها: عدم صحة المصنوع ومحاولة صانعه عده من الصحيح عن طريق الاستشهاد به، واجتماع صِفَتَىِ المخالفة للغة العرب والجهل بالنسبة معًا فى المصنوع، وظهور دلائل الصنع على النص محل الشاهد المصنوع، والانتصار لرأى معين. ثم يأخذ في تبيان سبل معرفة العلماء بالمصنوع، التى كان منها: الخبرة والدراية، واعتراف صانعه، وقياس المصنوع على الأوزان المستعملة، وتمييز الحروف التى لا يصح اجتماعها. ويوضح الكتاب بعد ذلك موقف العلماء من الأخذ بالمصنوع أو تركه، مع دراسة نقدية تحليلية لموقفهم، تكشف عما هو مصنوع بحقٍّ ولا يمكننا الأخذ به، وتكشف أيضًا عما وُسِمَ بأنه مصنوع، وهو من ذلك بَرَاءٌ.
