"في رواية ""المغفلون""، يكتب الراوي الثلاثيني - الذي يعمل في مجال الدعاية والإعلان - رسالة طويلة يوجهها إلى الرجل الذي سرق حبيبته المثيرة والمتقلبة ""مود"". لنكتشف بالتدريج أن ذلك الكاتب الأمريكي ليس سوى ""ج. د. سالينجر""، مؤلف الرواية الشهيرة The Catcher in the Rye (1951). ثم يصدم الراوي ذلك الكاتب بعدها بمفاجأة، ويجعله يتساءل أيهما المغفل: الراوي، أم الكاتب الذي يواجهه، أم كلاهما معًا؟
لكن الرواية ليست سوى حيلة فنية استخدمها المؤلف ليطرح وجهة نظره وتساؤلاته حول العالم كما يقول ""أي عصر يتآمر علينا؟"". لقد أصبحت الحياة بمثابة شريط لا نمثِّل فيه سوى لقطة، مما لا يُمكِّنُنا، ولا يُمكِّن الآخرين من التأمُّل فيها وفهمها.
الرواية قصيرة، كُتبت برشاقة وتناغم. يتخللها أقوال مأثورة فاتنة ومُخيِّبة للآمال، كما تختلط فيها المشاعر واللا مُبالاة. نعثر فيها على شخصيات من وقت آخر، عصر آخر، عزيزة على ""إريك نويوف"".
