"عندما يكتب المرء مذكراته، فلا يجب عليه أن يقرأها إلا بعد سنوات طويلة من كتابتها. فالكلمات والأسطر التي كتبت منذ ثلاثة أيام يمكن أن توقع به في شعور عميق بالخجل من ذاته إن قرأها، بينما نفس الأسطر والكلمات ستصبح معجزات إذا ما تم قراءتها بعد ثلاثة وعشرين عاما. للكتابة دورة حياة خاصة بها. ولو سلمنا بأن الكتابة تولد بعد أن يغادرها سن القلم، فإن ثلاثة وعشرين عاما فترة كافية لنمو هذه الكلمات وتطورها حتى تصبح كيانًا مستقلًا عن كاتبها.
لابد وأن العشر سنوات الأولى هي الفترة التي تبدأ فيها الكتابة التعرف على ذاتها. تتعارف الحروف على بعضها وعلى الدفتر التي كتبت فيه. لابد أن الحروف بجميع أشكالها وأنواعها تتعارف وتتحدث مع بعضها أولًا، ثم في العقد الثاني تنسى الشخص الذي كتبها، ثم تتخلص من مخاوفها حرفًا بعد حرف، ثم تتخلص من أمراضها المزمنة والوراثية المعدية التي كان من الممكن أن تسبب لها مشكلات كبيرة مستقبلًا، ثم لا يكون لها أي علاقة بالشخص الذي كتبها. ولأن الكاتب نفسه يكون قد تغير خلال هذه السنين فلابد وأنه سيشعر أنها ليست كتابته حين يعود إليها.
لهذا فمن الممتع دائمًا أن تقرأ عن آلامك حين تصير وكأنها آلام شخص آخر...
