تتمحور الرواية حول صلاح، الشخصية التي تتميز برائحة آسرة ومختلفة، ولديه إرتباط شديد بأمه يصل إلى مرحلة القداسة في الاحترام والحب والتعلق، يظهر هذا في حديثه معها وهو يجلس بالقرب من قبرها الذي يعود إليه ليحتفل بعيد ميلادها، هناك، ويوزع الحلوى على المقابر بطريقة سريالية رمزية. تتحدث الفصول الأولى عن صلاح الطفل المغامر العاشق الذي يقطع الكيلومترات الطويلة لرؤية فتاة تسكن على قمة جبل، لم يسمع حديثها ولم يقابلها إلا أنه يحبها، ويتحدث عن مغامرته مع صديقه مصطفى حين ذهبا للالتحاق بالثورة ليحاربا عدوهما. وتتحدث عن صلاح الذي يعمل في الصحيفة ثم يغادرها بسبب وصوله سن التقاعد، وتتحدث في هذا الجانب نجاة، مديرة شؤون الموظفين في الصحيفة، كما يتحدث عنه رجل الأمن الذي يطلب منه التعاون معه. ثم تتحدث الرواية عن صلاح من خلال شخصية حارس المقبرة فوزي، وكذلك من خلال سيدة اسمها سلمى، وكلاهما يسمعانه وهو يتحدث إلى أمه الميتة، ثم تتحدث عنه أميرة حبيبة الطفولة التي تكبر وتتزوج وتتطلق وتلتقيه ثانية. وهناك شخصية العقيد زُهرة التي تستدعيه بسبب محاولاته نقل أمه المتوفاة وجميع الأموات في الحارة إلى بيوتهم بسبب تعرضهم للتهديد.، حيث يقوم صلاح بتنظيم جنازة عكسية تنقل الأموات من قبورهم إلى بيوتهم، وهي جنازة رمزية أكثر منها حقيقية، وذلك للحفاظ على ذاكرتهم بصفتهم نازحين. ويتضح فيما بعد أن العقيد زُهرة هي الفتاة ذاتها التي أحبها صلاح في المدرسة الثانوية. هناك شخصية صابر وهي الوجه الآخر لصلاح التي تحاكمه أحيانا وتكشف بعض الحقائق أحيانا أخرى. الرواية تعيد الاعتبار لعلاقة الإنسان بأمه الطبيعية، وأمه الأرض، وأمه القضية، وتدق ناقوس خطر زوال ذاكرة النازحين بسبب ممارسات المتطرفين الذين يريدون حرق المقبرة وحرثها. من الناحية الفنية تتبع الرواية منهج القصة القصيرة، حيث يشكل كل فصل قصة قصيرة يستمتع بها القارئ، ولكن تحرضه للاستمرار في القراءة.
