بطل رواية "رقصة الفيلسوف" مفكّر إستراتيجي مثير للجدل، عمل ولا يزال مستشاراً لزعيم عربي، تسلّم عمله بعد مغادرة فلسطين هارباً إثر توجيه الاتهام له بالتعامل مع العدو في زمن الحرب، أي حزب الله.
هذا المفكر أو الفيلسوف مارس الرقص السياسي، فهو ينظّر للديمقراطية والعلمانية في الوقت الذي يعمل لدى زعيم غير ديمقراطي وغير علماني ويدعم التطرف، كما أنه يؤمن بالقومية العربية ولا يعترف بالقومية الفلسطينية، يتورط في علاقة جنسية مع زميلته الإسرائيلية (تسيبورا) ثم يستمرئ الأمر ويبرر أفعاله ويصفها بالمقاومة.
يدعي عشقه لزوجته "ليال" وفي الوقت نفسه يساكن امرأة مغربية من أصل يهودي خلال إقامته في بريطانيا، وهذة المرأة تقوم بدور كبير في الرواية بصفتها فنانة تشكيلية وتتمتع بقدرة على الإنصات والصمت. ينتقل الفيلسوف للإقامة في بريطانيا ويكتشف محاولة لاغتياله من قبل جندي درزي كان يعمل في الجيش الإسرائيلي، وهنا تسلط الرواية الضوء على واقع الدروز، تتهمهم وتحاول إنصافهم في الوقت ذاته، ويعود الفضل في إحباط عملية الاغتيال إلى رجل من جنوب لبنان يدير مطعماً في لندن.
تصل الفيلسوف رسالة من مُبعد فلسطيني لجأ إلى لبنان، يسأله في نهايتها: كيف تشعر وأنت في وطنك؟. تؤثر الرسالة به كثيرا ويبحث عن الإجابة كلما سنحت له الفرصة، وهي فرص كثيرة، لكنه يفشل في الإجابة، السؤال يشكل ركيزة أساسية للرواية أيضا.
رغم أن الرواية واقعية إلا أنها لا تنتهج سلّما تصاعديا في الأحداث وما في باطنها أكبر بكثير من الأحداث المذكورة، فالرواية بقدر ما هي رواية حدث وفعل، إلا أنها رواية فكرية، وهنا تكمن صعوبة الحديث عنها.
