"حمامو، مهاجر مغربي، يجد نفسه في إقليم الباسك بين إسبانيا وفرنسا، يعاني من الاستلاب النفسي أو العبودية الناعمة على حد قوله، على إثر علاقة حب مع طبيبته النفسية مونيكا الباسكية-العربية. فكان لزاماً عليه أن يتماهى مع الكثير من الأحداث المستندة على عدة شخوص، أهمها الطبيب البيروفي فركاس طابروس الحالم بتحقيق الثورات في العالم، رغم فشل حركة «مير»، ومحمد حسوني الماركسي الذي يبحث عن الخلاص وسيتحول من كارل ماركس إلى فقيه متزمت، لم يجد خلاصه إلا في الجهاد، الأمر الذي سيدفعه للهجرة إلى بيشاور. كذلك والد مونيكا؛ احميدة السطيفي الذي غادر سان سيباستيان، بعد طلاقه من والدتها تشيشيلي، حيث سيصادف بداية العشرية السوداء في الجزائر. والعجوز البرجوازية مارثين التي تكرس ما تبقى من عمرها في حب حمامو والبحث عن القصد والفعل معاً.
ثمة وجوه أخرى ثؤثت الفضاء الروائي كالسعدية والدة حمامو، التي تخال كل الدول مَلكيات، فتسرف في بعث رسائل التهديد له أحياناً، ورسائل الرجاء أحياناً أخرى.
إنها وجوه تتقاطع فيما بينها لتخلق لنا حيوات متجاورة تغني حديث الوجوه المائلة.
