منذ أواسط القرن التاسع أخذ العرب يشعرون بأنّ شيئا جللاً قد وقع في أفق أنفسهم لم يعد يمكن فهمه بالاعتماد على أيّ معجم من معاجم أنفسهم القديمة. لقد تعطّل نحوُهم وضعف بيانهم وتخشّبت حكمتهم وشحبت ديانتهم وبدا وجودُهم التاريخي متاهةً مخيفة في صحراء من نوع آخر تماما، - إنّها "الأزمنة الحديثة" وقد حلّت من دون سابق إنذار مناسب ولا أيّ شكل من الاعتراف اللائق بشرعية الحضارة التي يحملونها وبنوا على أساسها رؤيتهم للعالم. ثمّة واقعة تاريخية وروحية زلزلت كيانهم الذاتي وصار عليهم مواجهتها. إنّها الحداثة وقد أخذت لبوس دخيل لغوي ووافد ثقافي وأجنبيّ سياسي لا مردّ له. كان الاستعمار الغربـي قد صار أمرا واقعا، مادّيا في بعض البلدان ومعنويا في سائرها. شبح كبير أخذ يمدّ بظلاله على وجودهم السياسي، ويهدّد بإدراجهم في تركة الرجل المريض، وبالبدء في ابتلاع ذواتهم الجديدة وتحويلها إلى فتات أخلاقي وهامش إنساني للرجل الأوروبـي المدجّج بعصر التقنية كموقف علمي غير مسبوق من الطبيعة ورؤية وضعانيّة لتاريخ الإنسانية.
