يضم مجموعة من المُقاربات التي تلامس قضايا الشعر التي توزعت على مجموعة من الفصول، هي: «الشعر وأفق الكتابة»، و«ما بعد القصيدة» و«القيمة الشعرية» و«في صداقة الشعر».
ويرى بوسريف في مقدمة كتابه أن ما كَرَّسَتْهُ النظريات الشِّعرية القديمة، عند العرب، وهو ما سينعكس سَلْباً على الكتابات الحديثة، هو أنَّ الشِّعر، هو الوزن، وما تبقَّى، ليس بقيمة هذا الدَّالِّ نفسه، كونه «الدَّالّ الأكبر»، أو هو «القيمة الشعرية» التي لا يمكن أن يَحْدُثَ الشِّعر دُوُنَها. وهذا ما جعل النقاش الذي دار حول الشِّعر، في الخمسينيات من القرن الماضي، يَنْصَبُّ حول هذا العُنْصُر، وهو ما ظّلَّ مُسْتَمِرّاً، خصوصاً مع ما سُمِّيَ بـ « قصيدة النثر»، دون النَّظر إلى الشِّعر، باعتبار ماضيه، أو بالعودة إلى أصول مفهوم «الشِّعر» ذاته، لِمُراجَعَتِها، وإعادة بناء فرضياته، التـي تَمَّ تَعْتِيمُها، بمفهومٍ آخر مُهَيْمِنٍ، هو مفهوم «القصيدة» التي كانت أساس ما تَمَّ تكريسُه من «قواعد» و«قوانين»، كان لعصر التدوين دور اللحظة الحاسمة في تَثْبيتها، وفـي اعتبارها، ما سَيُمَيِّز الشعر العربي عن غيره مِنَ المقترحات الشِّعرية المُصاحِبَة له، أو باعتبـاره، التَّوْقيعَ الشَّخْصِـيَ للثقافة العربية، قياساً بما كان عنـد «الآخر»، غير العربيِّ.
وبحسب بوسريف، فحين «شَرَعَ النَّصُّ في ابْتِذَال القاعدة، وفي تغيير قوانين الشِّعر، أو في تشويشِها، بالأحرى، عاد النقد، أو مَنْ عَمِلُوا على ممارسة الشِّعر نقداً، إلى الاحتماء بـ «القاعدة»، وإلى إحياء المفاهيم والنظريات، ليس في أصولها البعيدة، بل في ما أصبح بمثابة البديهي والمُسَلَّم به، من قبيل حَصْر «الشعر» في «القصيدة»، أو تعريف أحدهما بالآخر، دون العودة بكُلِّ واحد منهما إلى مصدره، أو إلى الأصل المَفْهُومِيِّ الذي جاء منه، أي «التَّسْمِيةَ» بالمعنى الهايدغري، بما في ذلك الأصل اللغوي الذي يجمع بين الاثنين، أو يفصل بينهما». مضيفا «أعيدُ، هنا، ما كُنتُ قُلتُه وكتَبْتُه فـي أكثر من مكان، فـ «الشِّعر» لُغَةً، ليس جمعاً بل كثرةً، وحتـى إذا اعتبرناه جمعاً، فهل «القصيدة» مفرده»؟
