يعتبر هذا الكتاب تاج على رأس أدب الرحلات فهو أشهرها على الإطلاق، كما أن ابن بطوطة هو أمير الرحالة المسلمين، وقد دون رحلته هذه وتحدث فيها عن البلدان التي زارها والشعوب التي عرفها متحدثًا عن مواقع البلدان، والمسافات بينها، وعن أحداث من تاريخها وعن العادات والتقاليد السائدة فيها، والعلاقات بينها، كما وصف مظاهر العمران وألوان الحضارة مما لا نعتبر معه مغالين ولا مبالغين إذا قلنا: إن هذا تكاد أن تكون دائرة معارف مصغرة لهذا العصر الذي عاش فيه ابن بطوطة. ولهذا لقي هذا الكتاب عناية بالغة من الباحثين.
