عاد زهير الجزائري إلى العراق عقب غربة قسرية دامت أكثر من عشرين عاماً. وراح يستقصي بعين الصحافي الخبير أحوال البلاد وناسها، مقارناً بين الماضي والحاضر، ومستذكراً أمكنة وأصدقاء وأقارب وأياماً وحكايات. ينتقد نظام صدّام حسين الذي أغرق العراق في حمامات دم، وأفقر الشعب، وطارد المعترضين من مفكّرين وشعراء وساسة.
ينتقد القوات الأميركية التي استقرّت في بلاده، وأفكار بن لادنوالظواهري، واستمرار ظاهرة السيارات المفخّخة وقتل المدنيين وحال التفرقة المستفحلة.
رواية طالعة من أتون العراق، كأنها كُتبت تحت دوي القصف ولعلعة الرصاص، وبين أكوام الجثث والدبابات المحترقة.
