يحتوي هذا الكتاب على دراسة علمية شاملة ومتخصصة تعالج تاريخ السلاجقة الذي امتد في بلاد الشام أربعين سنة تقريباً (471-511هـ/1078-1117م)، وهدفها إعطاء صورة شاملة عن هذا التاريخ وإجلاء مضمون مرحلة مهمة من مراحل التاريخ الإسلامي ولتحيط الدراسة بكافة جوانب الموضوع استندت إلى مصادر هامة ومتنوعة لمؤرخين عاصروا الأحداث واشتركوا فيها، فكتبوا ما شاهدوه، بالإضافة إلى مؤرخين متأخرين اختصوا بتاريخ المنطقة وأضافوا إلى الأحداث روايات أخرى.
وهذا ما جعل منها دراسة عامة متكاملة حوت كل ما يتعلق بالسلاجقة بدءاً من أصلهم وعلاقتهم المبكرة بالمسلمين، وانتهاءً بالعلاقات السلجوقية-الصليبية، بعد الحملة الصليبية الأولى، والمواجهات بينهم وبين الصليبيين في شمالي بلاد الشام وجنوبيها.
