لعب السلاجقة دورا مهما على مسرح التاريخ لا زالت آثاره باقية إلى يومنا هذا وكانوا من الجماعات التركية التي خرجت من مواطنها الأصلية ثم إستقرت في أرض جديدة صنعت فيها أوطانها وحملت معها عناصر من مقومات حياتها الأولى وإقتبست من مقومات الحضارة الأصلية في الأرض الجديدة وكانت حركتهم من الحركات الكبرى التي غيرت وجه التاريخ.
وقد كان السلاجقة- في أصلهم- مجموعة من القبائل التركية التي دفعتها الظروف الإقتصادية والسياسية إلى كثرة التنقل إنتجاعا لمواطن الكلأ وبحثا عن أسباب العيش الرغد، إلى أن سكنوا في إقليم ما وراء النهر في أواخر القرن الرابع وأوائل القرن الخامس الهجريين ثم إنتقلوا بعد مدة وجيزة إلى إقليم خرسان وأخذوا يجنحون إلى الإستقرار ويكونون الجيوش حتى تمكنوا من إقامة دولة في عام 439هـ(1037م)ـ. إعترف الخليفة العباسي بقيامها في عام 432هـ(1040م). ولم تلبث دولة السلاجقة أن بسطت نفوذها على إيران والعراق وعلى أكثر أجزاء آسيا الصفى والشام.
